Legal Services in Bangladesh

Trademark registration, patents, copyrights, litigation and more. Here is what

we do and how it actually works.

What We Do

Our IP & Legal Services

We do not handle every kind of law. We focus on intellectual property and related commercial legal work — and we do it well. Here is every service, explained plainly.

01

Trademark Registration in Bangladesh

Your brand name and logo are only legally yours once they are registered. Bangladesh is a "first to file" jurisdiction — which means if someone else registers your name before you do, they own it. Not you. That has happened to businesses here. It is not a theoretical risk.

We handle trademark registration in Bangladesh start to finish — searching the DPDT database for conflicts, preparing your application, filing with the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT), tracking the status, responding to any objections the Registrar raises, and handling opposition if a third party challenges your mark during the 60-day publication window.

Once registered, your trademark is valid for 7 years from the date of filing, then renewable every 10 years. We manage renewals too, so nothing lapses without warning.

And if someone copies your mark after registration — that is trademark infringement in Bangladesh, and we deal with that too. We issue cease and desist letters, conduct market inspections, and take infringers to court when needed. Remedies include injunctions, damages, and destruction of infringing goods.

02

Patent Registration in Bangladesh

If you have invented something new — a product, a process, a piece of technology — a patent gives you exclusive rights to make, use, sell or licence it. Without one, your competitor can legally copy your invention and profit from it. You cannot stop them.

Bangladesh's patent system went through a major update. The Bangladesh Patent Act 2023 officially came into force on February 27, 2025, replacing legislation that dated back to 1911. The new Act brings Bangladesh in line with international TRIPS standards, which matters if you deal with foreign investors or partners who want to see proper IP protection in place.

One important thing for international applicants: Bangladesh is not a PCT member country. That means there is no international patent filing route here. Foreign companies must file a direct national application with the DPDT — usually claiming priority under the Paris Convention within 12 months of their home country filing. This is where having the right patent attorney in Bangladesh matters. We manage the full process and avoid the common mistakes that slow things down.

Copyright protection in Bangladesh kicks in the moment you create something original — a book, a piece of software, a film, a photograph, a piece of music, artwork. You do not have to register it for the right to exist. It is automatic.

But here is the problem. When someone steals your work and you go to court, a registered copyright is evidence. An unregistered one is harder to prove. Copyright registration in Bangladesh is not mandatory — but it makes enforcement significantly simpler. Courts treat it as proof of ownership, which shifts the burden.

We handle registration under the Copyright Act 2023 through the Copyright Office under the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. We also represent clients before the Copyright Board and the High Court when infringement happens — whether that is someone copying your software, reproducing your creative work without permission, or pirating your content.

Our Chamber Director was a key contributor to Bangladesh's Copyright Act 2022 — so we know exactly how the law works, what it protects, and where the gaps are.

04

Industrial Design Registration in Bangladesh

A lot of businesses protect their brand name and their invention — but forget about the way their product looks. That is a gap. If your product has a distinct visual appearance — a unique shape, colour combination, surface pattern, or packaging design — that can and should be protected as an industrial design.

Industrial design registration in Bangladesh is handled through the DPDT under the Designs Act 2023, which replaced the old 1911 legislation. Registration gives you exclusive rights over the visual appearance of your product for an initial period of 5 years, renewable up to 15 years.

It is a separate protection from trademarks and patents. Design rights cover how something looks — not what it does. And in a market where product imitation is common, having that registered protection means you can go after copycats legally. We handle the full registration process, conflict searches, and enforcement if someone copies your design.

05

IP Litigation in Bangladesh

Sometimes a cease and desist letter does the job. Sometimes it does not, and you need to go to court. Or someone brings a case against you and you need a strong defence. Either way, IP litigation in Bangladesh requires a team that has actually argued these cases in front of a judge — not just filed the paperwork.

We handle IP disputes before the District Judge Court, the Copyright Board, and the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh. That covers trademark infringement, patent violations, copyright theft, design copying, passing off, counterfeit goods seizures, and border measure actions through Bangladesh Customs.

Before going to court, we build the case. That means market inspections, evidence gathering, cease and desist letters, and where appropriate, negotiation or mediation to get a faster resolution. Going to court is not always the best outcome — sometimes a well-drafted letter achieves more in two weeks than a lawsuit does in two years. We give you an honest assessment of both routes.

And when it does go to court — our trademark lawyer Dhaka team knows how to win. Our Chamber Director helped draft the Copyright Act 2022, so we know this law better than most.

06

Corporate & Commercial Law

IP is not the only thing businesses need legal support with. We also work on the corporate and commercial side — company formation, contract drafting, joint ventures, regulatory compliance, and cross-border business transfers.

A lot of our corporate clients come to us because they already trust us on IP matters and want a firm that understands their business. We keep things practical and focused on what actually protects you — not on generating unnecessary legal cost.

We work with businesses of all sizes, from startups registering for the first time to established companies handling more complex restructuring. If you are a foreign company operating in Bangladesh, we also advise on cross-border issues — including how your international IP registrations interact with local law.

07

Maritime & Shipping Law

Bangladesh handles a large and growing volume of maritime trade, and admiralty cases have been rising alongside it. We handle vessel collisions, cargo disputes, ship arrests, shipping contracts, crew wage claims, and maritime insurance issues.

Cases can often be settled in around six months. Court fees are capped at Tk 1,00,000 based on claim value — and crew wage claims cost as little as Tk 100 to file. If your business touches port operations, freight, or shipping, we know this area well and can move quickly when speed matters.

About DPDT — the authority for trademark, patent and design filings in Bangladesh

The Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT) is the government body under the Ministry of Industries that handles all trademark, patent and industrial design registrations in Bangladesh. It was formed in 2003 by merging the separate Patent Office and Trademark Registry. The DPDT is also affiliated with WIPO.

Copyright registrations are handled separately by the Copyright Office under the Ministry of Cultural Affairs (MOCA). These are two different offices — a common source of confusion for first-time applicants. We handle filings with both, so you do not need to navigate either on your own.
